Here’s how we work

Come take a look at our personal “offices” and equipment

Nonstop Honolulu doesn’t have a central office or actually any shared work space. We all work independently in our homes, and although it would be nice to have a Nonstop Honolulu newsroom some day, we don’t really need it. With so much high-tech and mobile equipment available, we can easily produce content and operate our website without lacking anything.

Our mode of operation has been to utilize whatever technology emerges that facilitates our work (and that we can afford). As far as communication, there’s no loss of that. We “talk” throughout the day (and night) through countless e-mails and texts, and we meet regularly, usually at my house, for working pau hana potlucks.

Since we don’t have a main office that you can come visit, I thought I’d show you our personal work spaces and what equipment we rely on to bring you Nonstop.

I started drooling when I saw Ed's computer and camera setup, then pure jealousy took over when I saw John's setup. I want those lenses!

With Technology, who needs a physical office. You've got Virtual Offices, Video Conference Centers (which helps if everyone can get online the same time), Cloud Storage (which I still have to read up on), and good old email, IM, Twitter, and a reliable cell phone. All this and a central server to post, update, and push your blogs and you're all ready to repeat it again the next day.

NSHNL is predominately Apple based I see. 5 Mac afficionados' and 2 Intel/AMD guru's. Of course johngarcia being the digital guru that he is already has a dark room for his precise work which I can really relate to.

I like melissa808 's "office" the best, especially this particular one on Ward Ave with a bowl of Oxtail Soup. Who can resist going to work at a different "office" every day and ordering a fuud item to taste, ponder, and then writing it up.

In the words of the immortal fictional character Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith: "I love it when a plan comes together". It's great to see how the team works independently and pulls it all together virtually.

harrycovair johngarcia melissa808 Holy cow u00e2u0080u0094 are you able to post!?

harrycovair 77 pts

johngarcia johngarcia melissa808 I can reply to this one now, BUT, I can't reply to another blog. This is getting weirder and weirder.

harrycovair johngarcia Melissa808 Just so you guys know, we're going to put some things live in the next couple of days that will give us a much better idea of what on earth is happening to harrycovair and his posting woes. There will be error handling and logs sent to us for each case that will give us more exact data on where the issue is occurring when your not able to post.

harrycovair 77 pts

jkretch johngarcia Melissa808 Am I the only one reporting a problem such as what I'm encountering? Gee, I must be really unique.

Let me know by either a tweet or thru this blog. I'll even step down and use a vanilla version of IE 8 if that will make things a little easier to diagnose.

harrycovair 77 pts

jkretch johngarcia Melissa808 Weird, the reply above posted but I couldn't post a reply to M's post from 2 days ago (as of this time stamp that is).

jkretch 371 pts

harrycovair Harry, yep, you're the only one - who we know about at least - who has issues that seem to be completely random. It's not to do with timestamps or particular articles, it's something to do with your user sessions and establishing a consistent connection to our server. Safeguards and more reporting will help us fix it. johngarcia Melissa808

what a wonderful look behind the scene. this is what makes NSHNL a unique media source- the personal touch.

Mari- nice toes

Cat- the Coca-Cola company is on line two, they want to talk about a product placement deal. you wanna take it?

I Knew that John's setup would have to be a cross between the bridge of the USS Enterprise and the War Room from Dr. Strangelove.

Great pictures! You guys rock for being able to put all of this one from mobile offices. To have mastered working this way is quite an accomplishment. I love seeing an inside look into a website, especially one as fun as this one! Nice cat in the last photo...reminds me of a certain someone on the livefyre team; I'm always hearing "meow" during the skype meetings haha! Would love to see more posts like this!

DianeSeo 94 pts

JonHearty livefyre Thanks for the comment. Yeah, we didn't really have any choice financially but to work independently with mobile equipment, but in reality, I prefer it to being cooped up in an office from 9 to 5. And yeah, my cat is a fixture at my desk or dining room table. Guess she likes to be near the action.

MaxMaxMax 75 pts

DianeSeo JonHearty livefyre Been working from a "virtual" office for over ten years now. Using various screen sharing software for collaboration, to video/audio chats over the internet with not only clients in town, but across oceans, really shows how office space is not needed like it was in the pre-internet days!

Diane like this piece. My faves ... well Melissa and Cat and Mari of course ... but Diane, my cat is on my desk too so I love yours ... Most identify w Ed though cuz his workspace looks like mine, but he needs more books and to be a bit less tidy ... Kudos to you all though.

DianeSeo 94 pts

Maxcat Thank you. It's cool that people like seeing this kind of stuff. I guess it's breaking down any illusion that journalists or media folks have some sort of special work set-up. Nope, just normal folks with computers and cats...

Melissa808 269 pts

Maxcat No offense, but IMHO Pua is a bit of a "taker" and is one of those girls that uses her looks to get what she wants. And she does. LOL

DianeSeo 94 pts

Melissa808 Hey hey hey, that's my cat you're talking about. But yeah, she moves from one warm lap to the next.

Maxcat 22 pts

Melissa808 hahaha ... Melissa, no offense taken ... my current cat, 'Mousy' is a "taker," "talker" and generally obnoxious. But, I was pressured by younger people to get another cat and one of em was with me when the local APL shelter did a massive 'adopt a cat' day and stategically placed homeless kitties at coffee shops. This one saw me pulling into the parking slot and started doing the soft, barely audible meow and did her best to look totally pathetic. Of course my young friend was like " ... awww, if that isn't cuteness ..." So, Mousy, selected me and has been taking and talking ever since. Talk about being panhandled.

Melissa808 269 pts

Maxcat Some pets just naturally KNOW how to work it! On a side note, the cats in my neighborhood don't really care to mingle with humans. But watching them from afar, I can see their super distinct personalities. Who says that all cats are alike??

MoOgooGuypAN 20 pts

You folks seriously need to get Mari some kind of raise. Who has Sony Cybershot cameras anymore. I think the last one I owned was a 4 meg that took crappy pictures compared to my Lumix. And really...a flip phone? Are those compatible with 3G? You guys seriously need to get get Mari an iPhone4 which should cover her phone, camera, and video capabilities. BTW, throw in a real computer too...Mac Book Air anyone?

Melissa808 269 pts

MoOgooGuypAN I think Mari carries those by choice!

Maxcat 22 pts

Melissa808 MoOgooGuypAN like what Mari does with her choices ... the proof of the pudding (gotta play with foodie words here) is in the work Mari produces and it is 'al dente' which I loosely translate as to my taste ...

MoOgooGuypAN 20 pts

Melissa808 MoOgooGuypAN hahahahaha. I was just teasing. Retro is a style too. ;)

nonstopmari 246 pts

MoOgooGuypAN Melissa808 i'll take retro and leave it at that. but if i ever meet u in person, u will get the FULL response. mchang is right, btw, it's a matter of choice. not that i wd turn down a raise.

Maxcat u are the sweetest!

Hmm... looking at all those clean workspaces, comparing it to mine right now.. I just know I had to do something today... But what was it again? *rolleyes* lol

Anyways, cool to see more and more people work either from home or on the go, wish more companies/people did this. It would bring cost down for them, but also might take some traffic away from the roads :)
