Here’s how we work

Come take a look at our personal “offices” and equipment

Posted November 5, 2010 by Diane Seo

Nonstop Honolulu doesn’t have a central office or actually any shared work space. We all work independently in our homes, and although it would be nice to have a Nonstop Honolulu newsroom some day, we don’t really need it. With so much high-tech and mobile equipment available, we can easily produce content and operate our website without lacking anything.

Our mode of operation has been to utilize whatever technology emerges that facilitates our work (and that we can afford). As far as communication, there’s no loss of that. We “talk” throughout the day (and night) through countless e-mails and texts, and we meet regularly, usually at my house, for working pau hana potlucks.

Since we don’t have a main office that you can come visit, I thought I’d show you our personal work spaces and what equipment we rely on to bring you Nonstop.

Hey Cat, how are you liking your Canon S95? Was thinking about picking one up…

People on Twitter know that I go around town, mooching WiFi, AC, and electricity wherever I can! I’m not as comfortable working at home; I’d rather be a nomad in someone else’s space with the buzz of people around me (as long as they’re not talking to me while I work).

  3. Posted November 4, 2010 at 8:05 pm

This article has prompted me to clean up my desk a little bit more… yikes! Had to shoot it dark to hide all the wires and random paperwork, disks, etc. under my monitors. :)

I’m liking Melissa’s “desk”, but for me I’d be too paranoid with that much liquid around a laptop! Also interesting that Tracy is non-Apple as photographers/videographers seem to be mostly Mac users. Love the monitor on the sofa Mari! ;-)

  5. DianeSeo
    Posted November 4, 2010 at 8:39 pm

@808marv Yes, Tracy is a non-Apple groupie like the rest of us. Mari also uses a PC, but is thinking of coming over to the silver side.

@Johngarcia Dude, did you ever see my desk when I worked in an office? Heh. But we should all be proud that our desks don’t look like Kekoa’s. His desk is epic.

  7. Posted November 4, 2010 at 8:42 pm

I am digging these desks. Did any of you clean up your spaces for the article? ;-) (It’s okay. I’d do the same thing.)

    Hello Diane,
You should see the mess on my desk….

  9. DianeSeo
    Posted November 4, 2010 at 8:45 pm

@m Do show… Actually, it would be fun to do a follow-up gallery of our readers’ work spaces. Send me your pic at diane@nonstophonoluu.com.

  10. Posted November 4, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Hmm… looking at all those clean workspaces, comparing it to mine right now.. I just know I had to do something today… But what was it again? *rolleyes* lol

Anyways, cool to see more and more people work either from home or on the go, wish more companies/people did this. It would bring cost down for them, but also might take some traffic away from the roads :)

  11. Posted November 4, 2010 at 8:49 pm

    @DianeSeo @m cool idea… but…. so messy, too messy :( lol

    Posted November 4, 2010 at 9:42 pm

@Melissa808 And only you would list a knife as part of her standard gear! Though it was great to witness that historical occasion at Melt when you forgot it…and we didn’t take pictures. The shock of it all, I guess….

  13. Ynaku
    Posted November 4, 2010 at 10:17 pm

@hikino @Melissa808 Yep, no mess with a gal who carries a knife. It has been my perception of Melissa as the nomad and moocher (in a nice way)

@DianeSeo @m Picture a case of paper some stacked nicely, others strewn over a desk with a planner, destop, monitor, calculator, various pens and cds, and that’s my typical desk at work. Oh and you can’t see what color the top of my desk it. LOL but hey my workgroupd turns over jobs so fast I cannot keep up with the paperwork. So who’s complaining? Not my boses.

  15. Posted November 4, 2010 at 10:21 pm

This is awesome! Can totally relate! LOL!

  16. Posted November 4, 2010 at 10:23 pm

BTW, Melissa… Why mooch Wi-Fi when you’ve got Road Runner Mobile 4G from Oceanic!? 8)

You folks seriously need to get Mari some kind of raise. Who has Sony Cybershot cameras anymore. I think the last one I owned was a 4 meg that took crappy pictures compared to my Lumix. And really…a flip phone? Are those compatible with 3G? You guys seriously need to get get Mari an iPhone4 which should cover her phone, camera, and video capabilities. BTW, throw in a real computer too…Mac Book Air anyone?

  18. Melissa808

@Melissa808 @MoOgooGuypAN like what Mari does with her choices … the proof of the pudding (gotta play with foodie words here) is in the work Mari produces and it is ‘al dente’ which I loosely translate as to my taste …

Diane like this piece. My faves … well Melissa and Cat and Mari of course … but Diane, my cat is on my desk too so I love yours … Most identify w Ed though cuz his workspace looks like mine, but he needs more books and to be a bit less tidy … Kudos to you all though.

Great pictures! You guys rock for being able to put all of this one from mobile offices. To have mastered working this way is quite an accomplishment. I love seeing an inside look into a website, especially one as fun as this one! Nice cat in the last photo…reminds me of a certain someone on the @LiveFyre team; I’m always hearing “meow” during the skype meetings haha! Would love to see more posts like this!

@Ynaku @hikino @Melissa808 My wife used to carry industrial strength Tabasco sauce (12 oz bottle) in her purse in places like China, Okinawa, Mainland Japan, PI and Poland. Used to be report/outbrief writer on PACAF IG team (late 70s/early 80s). Me and my yellow pad wrote in some crazy places. Can’t imagine how much easier it is now. We took pics 35 mm SLRs and base photo labs had to be at our beck and call when inspection was over while we put stuff together. Outbrief was dual screen with 35 mm slides, we left report after outbrief …. It’s is just incomprehensible to imagine how different our life would have been. One constant though we always had food around.

@Maxcat Thank you. It’s cool that people like seeing this kind of stuff. I guess it’s breaking down any illusion that journalists or media folks have some sort of special work set-up. Nope, just normal folks with computers and cats…

@808marv Yeah, I never bought into the Apple hype. As an advocate of free, open-source software, I prefer non-proprietary hardware and software… I’m also a gamer and digital artist, so my laptop is definitely equal to or better than a Mac for graphics work :-P

    Posted November 5, 2010 at 5:17 am

@JonHearty @LiveFyre Thanks for the comment. Yeah, we didn’t really have any choice financially but to work independently with mobile equipment, but in reality, I prefer it to being cooped up in an office from 9 to 5. And yeah, my cat is a fixture at my desk or dining room table. Guess she likes to be near the action.

Cat- the Coca-Cola company is on line two, they want to talk about a product placement deal. you wanna take it?

@Melissa808 hahaha … Melissa, no offense taken … my current cat, ‘Mousy’ is a “taker,” “talker” and generally obnoxious. But, I was pressured by younger people to get another cat and one of em was with me when the local APL shelter did a massive ‘adopt a cat’ day and stategically placed homeless kitties at coffee shops. This one saw me pulling into the parking slot and started doing the soft, barely audible meow and did her best to look totally pathetic. Of course my young friend was like ” … awww, if that isn’t cuteness …” So, Mousy, selected me and has been taking and talking ever since. Talk about being panhandled.

With Technology, who needs a physical office. You’ve got Virtual Offices, Video Conference Centers (which helps if everyone can get online the same time), Cloud Storage (which I still have to read up on), and good old email, IM, Twitter, and a reliable cell phone. All this and a central server to post, update, and push your blogs and you’re all ready to repeat it again the next day.

NSHNL is predominately Apple based I see. 5 Mac afficionados’ and 2 Intel/AMD guru’s. Of course John Garcia being the digital guru that he is already has a dark room for his precise work which I can really relate to.

I like Melissa808 ‘s “office” the best, especially this particular one on Ward Ave with a bowl of Oxtail Soup. Who can resist going to work at a different “office” every day and ordering a fuud item to taste, ponder, and then writing it up.

In the words of the immortal fictional character Colonel John “Hannibal” Smith: “I love it when a plan comes together”. It’s great to see how the team works independently and pulls it all together virtually.

It’s not to do with timestamps or particular articles, it’s something to do with your user sessions and establishing a consistent connection to our server.
