Video blog: Top picks from four days of feasting in the Big O

By Mari Taketa on July 20, 2011

It’s too much to bring you here, all that I ate and tasted in four days in Osaka and Kyoto, but thanks to research, good friends and tips from many of you, this was one of my best gustatory ventures ever. I ate in the company of Japanese friends whose appetites put mine to shame, and with Burt Lum and Dallas Nagata White, who feared nothing and tried everything.

I owe major thanks to Ogura-san, Fujiwara-san, Monden-san and Choki-san, who never steered me wrong with their guidance; to Takumi, for the rekindling of a precious friendship (and for the ume jam from his wife); and to Burt and Dallas, who let me stick my chopsticks in their food more times than I can remember.

Read and watch the complete Japan eats series:

Ah well it all looks so good doesn't it! Was particularly attracted to the shave ice, that's a nice looking dessert right there.

808marv the scary algae-green one? that was bitter and sweet, a killer combo

nonstopmari oh I meant the uji kintoko w/matcha cream and mochi late in the video. Yeah the uji green tea shave ice looked kinda Simple Green-ish. :-P Sounds interesting though from your description! ;-)

EO: this one was major fuud overload. If you ate more, you will need to make friends with Jenny Craig. I don't think your metabolism could take the quantity of fuud, you will start to look like me! Funny no pix on sake?!

Annoddah_Dave ad, if u go to osaka, i'll join u and we will go drink sake. in 4 days i had only 2 glasses! rest of the time was beer, which as u know is sublime in that summer heat. and i really wish i were back there eating more...

PHOTOluluTV that ramen is my new fave. never heard of 'wakayama-style' until then, and the noodles were thick/chewy, and the owner/chef got anxious when i was taking pics and asked me to start eating before noodles got soggy. i like chefs like that!

if South Carolina and Georgia went into the Kudzu noodle biz, they could find a replacement for all their lost industries, tobacco, cotton, textile mills, country-of-rock - the roads there are wall to wall with that vine. i bet it goes well with collards and possum.

nonstopmari 189 pts moderator

turkfontaine i think i wd like collards and possum, esp if they came w/ cold kudzu noodles and black honey for dessert.

nonstopmari OK ... the videos are great. But if you want me to pause in the middle, then you'll have to add scratch and sniff =;-)

turkfontaine 189 pts

seantaketa nonstopmari be careful. you could scratch and sniff Durian, cause that's the way quirky dames think.
