The 2011 Oahu Fringe Festival kicked off Thursday evening at The Venue,The ARTS at Marks Garage and The ArtSmith with a lineup of dance and performance art shows that started at 5:30 p.m. We dropped in on the earliest program, from 5:30-7 p.m., to check out belly dancing and samba with Willow Chang, Jasmine Revolution Dance, Samba Hawaii and beat-boxer Jason Tom at The Venue, and the one-woman play “My Mobster” at The ARTS at Marks Garage.
“My Mobster” happens again on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 p.m., so get a sneak preview here and check it out during its second run!

Joy Nash's solo play, "My Mobster," was the first thing I experienced at The ARTS at Marks Garage for this year's Fringe Festival. It's the story of a rather odd romance between a young (virgin) American girl and a mysterious foreign gangster in Paris. The story, told in several acts, is beautiful, quirky, quite compelling, and apparently true. I won't give away too much because Nash is performing it again on Saturday, but the bit that touched me the most was imagining the flashback scene of her and her best friend going to buy ice cream in a thunderstorm and seeing two little old ladies doing the same.
Once you get into it, this is the sort of story that will make you laugh, gasp, nod knowingly and probably tear up a bit. Definitely worth seeing.
